Around Zojoji Temple, Tokyo

17 December 2019: To help recover from an overnight flight to Tokyo from Jakarta, we walked around the nearby Zojoji Temple and its grounds. I have photographed here before. The Japanese Maples were in full color, and the drum (here a detail) is one of my favorite subjects. For the photographers in the crowd, the drum is in a very dark corner of the main room. The exposure is f/1.2, 1/40 second, ISO 6400. It is amazing what these digital cameras can do!

Pantai Pandawa and Pantai Melasti

14 December 2019: Hengki and family took us on a tour of two beaches in Bali that I had not yet seen. They were Pantai Pandawa (Pandawa Beach) and Pantai Melasti (Melasti Beach). Beautiful views of the Indian Ocean south of Bali, but the weather was very hot, especially at Pantai Pandawa. Australia is seeing a heat wave, and some of that must have been leaking onto Bali. Very few were either on the beach proper or out on the water. Most were hiding in the shade, and this was a weekend day!

Bali Street Photography

  • 13 December 2019: From my morning walk in Seminyak: a) a dog scavenging in a partly abandoned strip mall, b) a rather humorous sign (I like all the lights poking out from the sides).

Paul and Lily posing in Javanese costumes

12 December 2019: Within the past year or so the same photographer who photographed Rika’s Bali wedding post-party designed and opened a cultural photo studio in an Indonesian cultural center in Bali. Visitors to the studio dress up in either Javanese or Balinese national costumes and pose in sets designed to look like classical Javanese or Balinese settings. I chose that we dress in Javanese costumes, and Lily chose the pattern. The guides in the museum use your own smart phone to take the pictures. I thought the pants on me were the best part!

Walk from Peti Tengit Beach to Kuta Beach

12 December 2019: Riki and I walked from Peti Tengit Beach to Kuta Beach in the early morning, and then up from Kuta Beach to Hengki’s house. The total distance was about 6.6 km. It was a great walk. Here is Riki talking with a surf fisherman along the way.

Pasar Kangkung, Bali

11 Decem ber 2019: This morning nephew-in-law Riki and I went on a 1.5 mile walk to a local market. This was the best shot of the walk. Riki bought some omelettes from her.

Tahwa Ronde Imbo Bali

10 December: For an after-dinner snack, we all went to a small ‘portable’ restaurant for wedang ronde or sekotang, Both are hot ginger-based drinks. The name of this restaurant is Tahwa Ronde Imbo Bali.

Pandaan

10 December 2018: A new mosaic from an image I took on December 6 with the iPhone in Pandaan. We had stopped for a late lunch on our way up to Batu. I really like the look of the guy on the back of the motorcycle.

Julio and Vando

8 December 2019: Lily’s nephew Julio and his wife Vyna have been guiding us around the Batu resort area that is south of Surabaya in East Java. Here is Julio holding his son Vando near the end of our excursions with them.

Lobby, Golden Tulip Hotel, Batu

6 December 2019: We are up near the volcanos again, this time out of Surabaya. We are staying in a fancy resort hotel that I targeted as possibly photogenic for my urban mosaics. This is the lobby of the hotel, before and after, with square tiles in the mosaic. I also want to try a version of this with rectangular tiles of different sizes. The original shot was taken from an upper floor balcony above the inner lobby, looking out toward the outer lobby.

Gunung Sumbing

5 December 2019: When I woke up this morning at the villa, this was the view out the front balcony. We had heard that there was a volcano out there somewhere, but it had been too cloudy and hazy to see it the past. Gunung Sumbing is active, but last erupted in the 1700’s.

Local schoolboys and passion fruit vines

4 December 2019: Top: I took another hike this morning, but took a left at the fork about 500 m up instead of a right. This motorcyclist stopped me, the driver shook my hand and asked me my name and where I was from. He wanted to practice his English, I think. He was taking these boys down from their school up the road. He wanted their picture taken, so I obliged.

Bottom: My villa-owning friend, although trained as an engineer, now spends a lot of time as a gentleman farmer. He is trying to grow passion fruit on a small commercial scale. The plants looked a lot like grape vines.

Magelang and Gunung Merbapu

3 December 2019: We stayed 3 nights in a villa in Magelang owned by a long time Indonesian friend. I hiked up a single-lane road behind the villa to see what I could see . The villa sits on the flanks of steamy Mount Merbapu, a dormant volcano shrouded in clouds. This was the view up the road near the start of the hike. I walked about 1.5 km up before turning around. There were many farmers working the fields, and all were very friendly - and amazed at seeing someone like me go hiking past. I was apparently the talk of the village. The villa sits at about 1300m in elevation, or just under 5000 feet. Morning temps were a nice cool 18°C, or in the mid-60’s F. It was a nice peaceful break from Jakarta.

Semarang Colonial-era Dutch Church

2 December 2019: We traveled by train from Jakarta to Semarang in central Java, and then went up to a mountainside villa by car. After arriving in Semarang we toured a bit of the old town, including the inside of this church that dates from 1742. The organ is not currently in working order.

Golf course, Gunung Geulis

28 November 2019: We went for about an hour’s walk just after sunrise on one of the two 18-hole golf courses at Gunung Geulis. I like the bright red clothing on the groundskeeper. She was sweeping the sand traps by hand.
