November 27: We went on an overnight excursion to a country club, hotel and golf course complex about 40 km outside of Jakarta. Lily’s cousin and uncle started this project in the 1980’s. It is cooler up here in the mountains, much cleaner air, and there were nice thundershowers in progress when I took this photo.

Our Jakarta hotel is immediately adjacent to two large malls. There is a covered pedestrian bridge that connects them, and this is a shot from the bridge towards one of the malls. What a glorious mess. I may start a series of mosaics about malls. I have a lot of material to work with right here!
24 November 2019: I wonder how that selfie came out? These are extended family members. The young lady in red is getting married this coming weekend, and we will be in attendance.
22 November 2019: Here are two photos of the grounds of the Japanese-style resort hotel in Izu. Beautiful place, as I said before. It was raining of the morning that I took these photos, lending them a nice soft light. The two people walking on the path are headed toward the main building. The other photo is the front of the Onsen, the hot springs bath house. Oh, was that nice and relaxing. I remembered doing this way back in the 1980’s when I worked on the Japanese satellite program. It is a great experience.

I took a short hike in sunny weather to the Kadowakitsuri Bridge and the Kadowaki lighthouse on the Izu coast near our ryokan. I think the purpose of the bridge is to get tourists out over the cliff edge to get a different viewpoint. The terrain is all volcanic. The suspension bridge has a very ineresting design. I think the two catenaries below and to the sides of the bridge deck are to counteract swaying. What do you think, Bruce?

After a nice 2 hour train ride southwest from Tokyo, we arrived at Izu-Kogen and our Japanese-style hotel for a few nights. This is one peaceful place.

We strolled around this beautiful park in central Tokyo. Both of these photos were taken at Shinji Pond inside the park. The tree shapes were fantastic! The old stone wall on the eastern boundary of the pond was quite photogenic. It reminded me of the (much smaller) stone walls in Ireland that Bruce admired.

Two different takes on the Peace Bridge in Calgary, Alberta.
28 August 2019: I am working on a new variation of a mosaic based on the Birks building in downtown Vancouver. Here is a draft constructed image as a mash-up of two reference images, one of Birks in the night (see the earlier all-night mosaic version in the Urban Mosaics section of this site) and a new image taken of Birks in daylight and in rain. The working title is ‘Jet Lag.’ I updated this image on September 1 to add more ‘dark’ tesserae on the right side.

We are staying in one of these heritage homes. They are Craftsman bungalows from the 1920’s. Very cool! The detail image is from a home a few blocks away that is up for sale.

We visited Zizzi Italian Restaurant in Dublin in late June at the end of the cycling trip, and we had a front-row seat near the open pizza oven. Canon AE-1, Ilford HP-5 film.
Andrea is in Lily’s French club, and she is also a singer. She appeared this week at the famous Lighthouse Cafe in Hermosa Beach, and we went to listen. I do not normally do photography of music performers, so this was a challenge!
